About

I am influenced by colours in nature. This has its origins in my own cultural heritage, I grew up in Japan, which has four marked seasons, a natural rhythm which has resoundingly influenced Japanese cultural forms. This cultural trait is reflected in my own work, where colour is like nature, it is conceptualized as integral to human society and culture.

Drawing on the metaphors of nature- movement and energy, flux and texture – I negotiate the rhythms of nature in my works with an exploration of my own sense of identity.

I have developed a personal and original technique that involves painting several layers of acrylic paint onto flat surfaces, which are then delicately engraved, furrowed and hollowed out to reveal a multitude of, otherwise hidden colours and textures. Through a series of lines and marks in the paint, abstract images are created, and a certain tempo is generated which corresponds to the metaphors of nature.

Painting with this technique offers an unpremeditated, random quality and also creates a sense of spaces and depth that I find interesting and exciting to use. Through my contemplative works, I capture the rhythms of nature and express my own fascination with the colours and textures of the world around me.
